In the project “Jam machine” I and a team member created an interactive artefact for urban spaces, which allows people to create music together. We went through all the stages – from sketches of the concept to prototyping, from sound design to tests and film documentation. For jamming in the city streets you just needed to log-in to the interface with your mobile device, which invites you to produce music together, so that even a beginner could participate in the process. Selected and created sound libraries and harmonies allow the participation even for total beginners. The visual look of the mobile installation, and the jam machine as an object itself was surely just a prototype for the possible bigger project, but the experiments and surveys we made by various test events showed that participants showed a big engagement by interactive jam. The months-long project was a part of a research PhD project under the supervision of the Chair of the Communication Science of the RWTH Aachen, and my internship and research assistance work for Dr. Prof. Martina Ziefle.
